Description
Kevlar Swatch
Kevlar® is a synthetic material that is 5x stronger than an equivalent weight of steel.
First developed in 1965 by chemist Stephanie Kwolek, Kevlar® has since become the trusted fiber in critical applications that require low weight and high strength.
Like many other synthetic materials, Kevlar® is a polymer formed into “chains” of repeating molecular groups. When many chains are bonded parallel to each other, their strength is compounded by the same atomic force that forms water molecules—hydrogen bonding.
These hair-like strands are then woven together into a mesh which makes it more versatile to use.
Some uses of Kevlar® include mooring cables, bulletproof armor, cut-resistant gloves, and even sails for racing boats. Kevlar® can be found in the engines and tires of modern aircraft, and was instrumental in the landing of Mars Pathfinder.
