Description
Sensitive Plant Seeds (Mimosa Pudica)
These are the seeds of the sensitive plant, also known as the shy plant, zombie plant, touch-me-not, and our favorite, the shame plant. Those nicknames are due to the plant’s ability to fold its leaves inward in response to mechanical stimulation.
This movement, which is transitted through the leaves by electrical signals, is thought to be a defensive mechanism to discourage predators or dislodge insects.
INTERESTING PROPERTIES
• Closing its leaves is energetically exhausting for the plant.
• Recent experiments show that anesthetics made for animals can be effective at ceasing the sensitive plant’s motor functions as well.
USES
• Current research is investigating how plant-based displays and touch screens can be made using the principles of this plant.
• Sensitive plants have many interesting chemical properties, including the roots which have been used to neutralize cobra venom. • Grow indoors in a sunny area. This plant thrives in nutrient-poor soil with sufficient water drainage and does not tolerate frost or shade.
